Top Gun?? No - Top Nav at Wellesbourne!

The Royal Institute of Navigation is always looking for new and exciting ways to stimulate interest and involvement in navigation on land, in the air, at sea and in space.

Currently, the RIN runs an annual general aviation competition called TopNav. The competition is open to teams of general aviators, and the competition focuses on determining waypoints using Gordon Wansborough's Vortrack system.

The competition is 'blind', as crews only know of their next waypoint whilst airborne. You get sealed envelopes to open at specific times and so the navigator has to do all their planning whilst airborne. The idea is to navigate your way round a set course of 8 to 10 waypoints (approx 200nm) using traditional navigation methods.

Stephanie Wall & Mick Littler

It's not timed, but accuracy and good planning are what count. However a handicap system is in place and points are deducted for crew experience and extra nav kit that may help along the way i.e. GPS. As well as finding all the waypoints, there are calculations for time en route and wind drift, and if you find yourself ahead of time, then they have to be recalculated. Teamwork is essential!!

TopNav took place in July 2007 at the White Waltham Aero Club, and Stephanie Wall and Mick Littler - members of Wellesbourne Aviation are in the top 8 prize winners for the competition. Stephanie and Mick won't know what position they came until they get to the presentation: They came 2nd in 2006, so they'll have to win this time! They will be attending Royal Institute of Navigation's Annual General Meeting at the Royal Geographical Society and will be presented with their trophy by the Duke of Edinburgh. Congratulations to them!

A Degree of Success Three Universities Cabair work with

2008 - Year of the Cessna?

The new Cessna 162 (SKYCATCHER) has given the GA world a new lease of life.  With deliveries starting at 2010, Cessna is already holding deposits on more than 1000 units at a price of $111,500 each.  This is the best example of brand loyalty ever.  We are delighted that Wycombe Air Centre has 10 SKYCATCHERs on order for their clients. WAC was actually the UK's first Cessna C-Star - a prestigeous dealership status offered out to those outlets that faithfully promote the Cessna brand.

In 2008, Cessna will introduce the famous 172 model with the turbo diesel option,  The 2.0 litre Thielert as a factory option will reduce the operating cost of a 172 significantly.

Cessna has been experimenting with this engine for sometime and we are confident that we will enjoy a reliable and more powerful engine in our Cessna 172's from mid year 2008.

Cabair Group has 18 Cessna aircraft On order for 2008 so far. Seven 172, mostly with Diesel engine, a 182 And 10 Skycatcher 162 with further orders pending.

Cabair College of Air Training have a flying visit from Polly Vacher

Polly Vacher is a famous English aviator specialising in long-distance solo flights, raising money for worthwhile charities. She was pursuing her "Wings Around Britain" tour - a Flight around the UK landing at all 206 airfields in the Jeppesen VFR Manual, between 21 May and 31 July 2007- when she managed to find time in her busy schedule to visit Cabair College of Air Training at Cranfield. As you can see from the photo right, we looked after her every needs! Polly answered questins from students and signed copies of her book "Wings around the world"

Polly proved to be an inspiratrion to both students and staff alike. As CCATs CE Graham Austin explains:

"Polly makes light of her remarkable achievements and adventures in an endearing low key manner, but has an anecdote to run on from any question asked. Her scariest moment, she recalled, was when the engine stopped while transferring from inboard to wing tanks at 12000 feet over some vast expanse of water. Her inspiration to campaign for scholarships to get the disabled flying and handling aircraft was her contact with Douglas Bader a number of years ago".

Polly faced a class of airline pilot cadets who were keen to find out what makes Polly tick: was she brave or mad to draw attention to this cause with such challenging flights? All came to the conclusion that she was both!

However, one point Polly made very strongly was that she not only plans her journeys carefully, she also tries to anticipate every handling contingency that she can envisage. She takes great pains to gain advice and training from those who have operated in the extreme climates she is to visit.

"Good targeted training was essential to safe operation" A very powerful message to deliver to commercial pilots under training with a College which shares that philosophy with a similar passion.

As Polly departed from Cranfield watched by Graham Austin and CCAT students (left) everyone felt very privileged to have shared time with this remarkable aviator.

Wellesbourne Aviation latest Cabair acquisition

Wellesbourne Aviation, the Midlands’ premier flying school based at Wellesbourne Aerodrome in Warwickshire, has been acquired by Cabair Flying Schools Limited, itself part of the Cabair Group.

Retaining its senior management team and all staff it will continue to provide the high quality pilot training for which it is renowned. The school’s link with Cabair’s flying schools and pilot training centres in the UK and overseas will bring many benefits and opportunities to both Wellesbourne Aviation and Cabair customers. With eight well known flying schools already delivering private pilot training at Bournemouth, Blackbushe, Biggin Hill, Cranfield, Denham, Elstree, Rochester and Wycombe, Wellesbourne is a welcome geographic addition to spread Cabair’s brand to the Midlands.

Wellesbourne Aviations’s previous part-owner and now General Manager, Peter Newbold, says:

“We are delighted to become part of the Cabair Group and look forward to working with them to make Wellesbourne Aviation one of the leading PPL schools in the country. We have a very young fleet having invested heavily in new aircraft over the last eight years. We believe in teaching people to fly using the most up-to-date equipment available - an ethos shared by Cabair who have one of the most advanced training fleets in Europe.”

Wellesbourne Aviation currently operates nine aircraft including 5 x Robin HR200, the 2160i for aerobatics, 2 x Piper PA28 Warriors and a Piper PA28 Arrow

The Cabair Group, formed in 1969, is now the largest flight training group in Europe - achieving some 65,000 flying hours from their fleet of over 150 aircraft. They have bases at 8 airfields in the UK and have affiliated training centres in Spain, America and Canada, and are major suppliers of new first officers for airlines worldwide through their Integrated Course, ‘First Office Direct’ and Modular Course ‘Pathfinder’ programmes.

Cabair hope to benefit from the ethos of the excellent customer service emphasis that has earned Wellesbourne Aviation the seal of approval from all its members.

LONDON SCHOOL OF FLYING CIRCULAR TOUR OF LONDON RAISES £700 FOR FLYING FOR THE DISABLED

Following an idea by one of the regulars from Cabair’s Wednesday Flying group at Elstree it was agreed that one of their trips should be a scenic circular tour of London taking in as many airfields as could be sensibly visited in a day.

After earnest discussion this became a fund raising event for “Flying scholarships for the Disabled ”and those taking part approached the airfields involved and asked them to waive their landing fees ,which they all did, and the flyers put the money saved into the Charity , raising £700.

Flying for the Disabled is the charity supported by Polly Vacher. Visit her website for details of her exploits:
www.worldwings.org

The accolade for the most airfields visited went to Gary Conrad and Richard Sumner in PA-28 G-KCIN who landed at no less than 18!

FIRST JAA ATPL COURSE STARTS AT FUJAIRAH

The first JAA ATPL course, which is a result of a collaboration between Fujairah Aviation Academy and Cabair College of Air Training (CCAT), commences in May at Fujairah International Airport. 10 self-sponsored students begin a 16 month integrated course and will go on to fly for various airlines after graduation.

CABAIR DIAMONDS SPARKLE WITH INSTRUMENT RATING TEST SUCCESS

Student pilots on Cabair’s First Officer Direct Integrated ATPL courses are raising a few eyebrows with their performances in the instrument Rating Test. The challenging IRT notoriously requires the skills of a “one-armed paper hanger”, yet current test results at Cranfield are suggesting otherwise.

Since the middle of January this year sixteen student pilots on the trot has secured a first time pass for the Instrument Rating, and, 100% of all students have gained "first series" passes since November 2006 when the Diamond DA42 came on line.

Phil Bell, Head of Training, ascribes this success to the Integrated package of ATPL training now on offer at Cabair College of Air Training – a leading provider of First Officers to airlines worldwide: “We have now matured our operation of the Diamond DA42 Twin Star aircraft and simulators. They are proving hugely popular with both staff and students.”

After initial VFR training in Spain on the PA28 and basic IFR training in the G1000-equipped single engine DA40, students complete their instrument training on the DA42 Twin Star aircraft and supporting simulators.

Bell adds:

“The Alsim 200 FNPT II configured as a DA42 perfectly compl ements the aircraft, providing a learning environment on the ground which replicates that in the air. Early indications suggest that our highly popular glass cockpit Diamond aircraft, and the hard work of our students and staff, are creating a very satisfying influence on test results. Long may it continue.”

Wycombe Air Centre, one of the UK’s leading flying schools based at Booker in Buckinghamshire, has been acquired by The Cabair Group of Aviation Companies. While retaining its senior management team and continuing to provide the high quality pilot training for which it is renowned, the School’s integration into Cabair’s group of professional pilot training centres in the UK and overseas will bring many benefits and opportunities to both WAC and Cabair customers – particularly within the framework of Cabair’s existing modular commercial pilot training system.

Wycombe Managing Director, Shari Peyami, says: “We have known Cabair for many years and are looking forward to working with them to develop our operations here at Wycombe – particularly commercial pilot training. Also, we expect to add value to our relationship with Cessna, for whom we have been an authorised representative for 9 years, and which we now hope will lead to the developing of sales within Cabair Flying Schools and the rest of the Group.”

Wycombe Air Centre currently operates a dozen aircraft including 10 Cessna and 2 Duchess twin-engine aeroplanes which are used for private and commercial training.

JULY 2006 - First Integrated Course flys out to fair-weather base
The first group of First Officer Direct students flew out to Valencia to commence their basic flight training. We have chosen to train in Spain in order to maximise the amount of flying our students receive in the first 2 months of the flying course at any time of the year. Valencia Airport will give the opportunity to operate in and out of a major airport, which is at the same time, very General Aviation friendly. In addition, flying in this part of Spain will leave students fully aware of the vertical extent of the local terrain - an awareness which will serve them well in their future as an airline pilot.
The student residence in Burjassot offers single en suite accommodation in an area of Valencia close to the University and other civic amenities. There are shops, restaurants and bars within walking distance, as is the underground station which links Burjassot with the City Centre.

MAY 2006 - CABAIR MAINTENANCE TO BE THIELERT AIRCRAFT ENGINE DISTRIBUTOR

Cabair Maintenance - the aircraft engineering division of the Cabair Group - has been awarded a prestigious Distributorship by Thielert Aircraft Engines (TAE) Gmbh of Lichtenstein. Cabair have extensive knowledge and experience of the CENTURION 1.7 piston aircraft engine through the maintenance of their fleet of Diamond Star Da-40 TDi aircraft at Cranfield in the UK, operated by their sister company, the renowned Flight School: Cabair College of Air Training.

Cabair Maintenance has also fitted 4 Piper Pa-28 aircraft with the same engine, and is thus well qualified to take up the distributorship.

TAE made the announcement whilst exhibiting in Berlin . Their state-of-the-art, fuel efficient, jet fuel piston aircraft engines are becoming very popular with General Aviation flight schools, charter companies and clubs. The engine lowers operating costs for fuel and service, and makes flying significantly cheaper.

In Berlin , TAE demonstrated their larger 4 ltr engine installed in a Cessna 206 and emphasised that they could be fitted to a range of Cessna twin-engine aircraft.

The Cabair Group intend to gradually increase the number of diesel engines in its fleet of 150 aircraft, reducing its fuel costs whilst offering customers a “One-Stop Engine Upgrade Facility “.

MAY 2006 - NEW Foundation Degree in Aviation Studies for Commercial Pilot Training
with options for a One-year BSc (Hons) in Aviation Studies

One of the main aims of this programme is to prepare students to pass CAA examinations to achieve an ATPL Licence. The assessment of the Foundation Degree is distinct from the licence requirement, but since the students are required to acquire a very large body of knowledge, examinations are more widely used than is typical on other KU Foundation Degree programmes. Accordingly, students may be eligible to enter the JAR ATPL ground examinations, which if passed along with practical flying tests, will enable application for a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) provided all requirements are met.

MAY 2005 - UNITED ARAB EMIRATES TO LAUNCH JAR ATPL ACADEMY

The Fujairah Aviation Academy in association with Cabair announces their intention to launch the UAE’s first JAR ATPL course.

The Fujairah Aviation Academy (formerly known as the Fujairah Aviation Centre) has been providing GCA courses for 20 years. Now, it will be working with Cabair’s College of Air Training at Cranfield , UK who are already a market leader in the delivery of ab initio airline pilot training courses.

The first course is scheduled to commence in September 2006.

A spokesperson for the Fujairah Aviation Academy said “This is a very exciting time for Fujairah and the United Arab Emirates . We are very pleased to be working with Cabair College of Air Training as they have extensive experience and hold a very high reputation within the industry for commercial pilot training.”

Application forms for the inaugural course are expected to be released during the first week of May.

MAY 2006 - GLASS COCKPIT DIAMOND STARS TO BECOME STANDARD WORKHORSE IN CRANFIELD TRAINING FLEET

The Cabair Group and Diamond Aircraft UK announce that an order for 15 new Diamond Star DA40’s has been placed with delivery planned to Cabair College of Air Training at Cranfield by the end of this year.

These aircraft are the latest state-of-the-art version of the highly popular Diamond Star- fitted with Thielert Centurion diesel power plants and completely integrated glass panel cockpits - which include the Garmin G1000 and two 10 inch colour displays.

Prior to this the Group will receive 4 DA42 Twin Stars - with the same glass cockpit avionics - for multi-engine training, instrument rating and multi pilot training. This will certainly create one of the most advanced training fleets in the commercial pilot training sector.

This 5 million Euro investment demonstrates Cabair’s ongoing commitment to provide their students with the most effective equipment available which will best prepare them for the environment they will ultimately experience – namely the flight deck of a modern commercial airliner.

As Cabair’s Head of Training at Cranfield explains: “Becoming familiarised with the glass cockpit from the very beginning of flight training will pay great dividends when it comes to the eventual transition from light aircraft to jet airliners – and especially throughout the line and type training when they join an airline.”

Airlines continue to recruit CCAT graduates throughout 2006

After four years of very slow recruitment, 2005 provided a significant increase in the requirement for newly trained First Officers. Several of the major UK Operators have started hiring initiatives drawing from those qualified pilots who have patiently been waiting for their first flying opportunities.During 2005, over 80 Cabair graduates were offered pilot positions. The majority of these have benefited both from the College’s strong airline associations and the guidance of highly experienced staff. Those recruiting include flybe. British European, for whom the College has acted as ab-initio training provider, for the past ten years. British Airways, British Airways Citiexpress, Bmi, Loganair and Eastern Airways. All those joining these companies funded their own training with the majority completing the JAA ATP Integrated Programme and others the JAA ATP ’One-Stop’ Modular Programme.

CCAT are presently in talks with several major UK operators to join their Self-Sponsored Graduate Recommendation Scheme.

It is anticipated that there will now be a steady requirement for well-trained Commercial Pilots, who are ready to make the transition to airline flying. It is also widely anticipated that there will be a sustained need for pilots over the next five years, with both UK airlines and airports in significant phases of expansion.

If you would like to take advantage of these opportunities, then please contact us to arrange the initial step of attending for Pilot Assessment and Interview.
