For those of you considering becoming an airline pilot, you will no doubt have quickly realised that the required training can be expensive. Expensive for the future pilot and his/her family - thanks to the effective cessation of traditional airline sponsorship - and expensive for the airlines if excess training is needed when candidates undergo type rating and airline specific training.

Entry standards for commercial training are not formalised and there is no official requirement for any prior assessment of the flying aptitude of trainees apart from meeting the appropriate JAA Class1 medical standards. The risk to both students and Flight Training Organisations (FTOs) can be significant, and it is clearly preferable that any potential risk be identified before any serious investment is made. Cabair recommend that anyone considering airline pilot training should go through an aptitude assessment before commencing training.
